P&O Ventura, launched in 2008, and sister ship Azura (2010), aimed to break the mould for P&O Cruises' ships -- bigger, contemporary and family-friendly. The idea was to transform what many people consider P&O Cruises' somewhat stuffy ambience to one more in tune with the times -- as well as making a play for the market all UK cruise lines are chasing: new to cruise. By popular consensus, they appear to have succeeded. Firstly, Ventura is significantly larger -- by 30 percent -- than any other ship in the fleet (bar Britannia, the flagship). This means there's more room for contemporary amenities such as expanded kids' facilities, a vast spa, numerous dining venues, and lots of recreational activities (three pools, sports court, golf nets). There is also a significant change in décor: the walls are covered in contemporary art and the decor is a combination of rich burgundy carpets and cream-coloured walls: reminiscent of a five-star London hotel.

Spain Portugal & France from Southampton – P&O Ventura – 6 April 2025

Spain Portugal & France from Southampton – P&O Ventura – 6 April 2025. Embarking on a cruise from Southampton, I had the opportunity to explore the vibrant cultures and breathtaking landscapes of Spain, Portugal, and France. This journey was a harmonious blend of history, gastronomy, and coastal beauty, each port offering its distinct charm.

Spain: A Tapestry of Tradition and Modernity

Our first stop was in the lively city of Barcelona. The iconic Sagrada Familia left me in awe with its intricate architecture and ongoing construction symbolizing the city’s dynamic nature. Wandering through La Rambla, I was captivated by the bustling atmosphere, where street performers and market stalls created a vibrant tapestry of local life.

In Valencia, the City of Arts and Sciences stood as a testament to Spain’s modern architectural prowess. Strolling through the Turia Gardens, I enjoyed the lush greenery and a taste of Valencia’s famous paella, a deliciously authentic culinary experience.

Portugal: A Coastal Gem

Lisbon welcomed us with its iconic yellow trams and narrow cobbled streets. The Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery were highlights, offering glimpses into Portugal’s rich maritime history. Sampling the famous pastéis de nata was a delightful treat, their creamy centers and flaky crusts a perfect pair with a cup of Portuguese coffee.

In Porto, the scenic Douro River set the stage for a relaxing day. A visit to a local port wine cellar provided insight into the region’s centuries-old wine-making traditions, and a tasting session allowed us to savor the rich flavors unique to this area.

France: A Blend of Elegance and Heritage

Our final destination was the elegant city of Marseille. The picturesque Old Port and the historic Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde offered stunning views of the Mediterranean coastline. The local cuisine, rich with Provencal flavors, was a delightful end to our culinary journey.

Overall, this cruise offered an enriching tapestry of experiences. From the architectural wonders of Spain, the charming streets of Portugal, to the elegant landmarks of France, each destination provided unforgettable memories that I will cherish forever.
