Honiara Solomon Islands, is the capital city of the Solomon Islands. Honiara and the surrounding area of Guadalcanal was host to one of the bloodiest battles of WWII, as US and Japanese forces wrestled for control of the Guadalcanal.
Honiara officially became the capital of the British Protectorate of Solomon Islands in 1952. The infrastructure developed by the United States during the war encouraged the British Government to shift the capital to Honiara.
Honiara waterfront is home to a number of eye catching modern buildings and is home to a number of World War II relics.Situated along Honiara waterfront is the Heritage Park Hotel, the Mendana Hotel, Iron Bottom Sounds Hotel, the Point Cruz Yatch Club, Break Water Cafe, Kokonut Cafe, Hyundai Mall, Sea King Restaurant, Pacific Casino Hotel and the Point Cruz Sea Port.
Despite being a small city, it offers a lot of things to do and see. The Central Market is a must-visit place for tourists. Here, you can find fresh produce, handmade crafts, and local souvenirs. The National Museum is another popular destination, where you can learn about the history and culture of the Solomon Islands. For those interested in World War II history, the Guadalcanal American Memorial is a must-see.
