Amsterdam

Amsterdam, a city known for its picturesque canals, charming architecture, and vibrant culture, offers a unique blend of history and modernity that captivates every traveler. Nestled in the heart of the Netherlands, this city is a haven for art lovers, history enthusiasts, and those simply seeking a serene escape. One of Amsterdam’s most enchanting features is its network of canals, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Taking a leisurely boat tour is a must, providing a unique perspective of the city’s stunning 17th-century architecture and quaint houseboats.

Art and History

Art enthusiasts will find themselves enamored with Amsterdam’s rich cultural offerings. The Rijksmuseum houses masterpieces from Dutch Golden Age artists like Rembrandt and Vermeer, while the Van Gogh Museum showcases the world’s largest collection of works by the tormented genius. Don’t miss the Anne Frank House, a poignant reminder of history, offering a moving insight into the life of the young diarist during World War II.

Vibrant Neighborhoods

Each neighborhood in Amsterdam has its unique charm. The Jordaan district, with its narrow streets and cozy cafes, is perfect for a leisurely stroll. Here, you can explore delightful boutiques and enjoy a coffee at a canal-side café. For a more modern vibe, head to De Pijp, known for its multicultural atmosphere and the famous Albert Cuyp Market, where you can sample local delights like stroopwafels and herring.

Culinary Delights

Amsterdam’s culinary scene is as diverse as its population. From traditional Dutch pancakes to Indonesian rijsttafel, the city offers a plethora of dining experiences. Be sure to try a local favorite, bitterballen, a savory snack perfect for pairing with a cold Dutch beer.

In Amsterdam, every corner beckons with stories of the past and the promise of adventure. Whether you’re wandering through its historic streets or relaxing by the canals, this city leaves an indelible mark on every visitor’s heart.

Things to do in Amsterdam

Jordaan

Often cited as Amsterdam’s most charming neighbourhood, wandering into the Jordaan feels like stepping back in time. Originally a working-class area, the Jordaan’s narrow streets and quaint buildings now make up one of Amsterdam’s most desirable quarters, dotted with independent art galleries, antique shops, courtyard gardens and atmospheric bars and restaurants.

Westergas

Located at Westerpark, this sprawling complex of former industrial buildings used to be the city’s municipal gasworks. Now transformed into a colourful cultural hub, Westergas is home to a variety of tempting bars, restaurants, coffee roasters, a microbrewery, art-house cinema, and a whole host of creative businesses. Look out for regular food markets, mini-festivals and events held here, such as the vibrant Sunday market.

Van Gogh Museum

The Van Gogh Museum houses a permanent collection dedicated to the best works of art by Vincent van Gogh and several temporary exhibitions. The Van Gogh Museum is the second most visited museum in Amsterdam, so the queues that form to get in are endless, especially on public holidays. To avoid them, we recommend discovering the museum first thing in the morning or last thing in the afternoon.
