Cap-aux-Meules. This island in the archipelago in the Gulf of St. Lawrence offers scenic fishing villages and wind- and water-sculpted coastlines of eerie beauty. The church of St. Pierre at Laverniere was constructed from the wreckage of ships that foundered on the offshore shoals. A lighthouse now warns others away. The island of Cap aux Meules is the gateway to the archipelago. The island may look more “urbanized”, but nature is never far away. A majority of the population of Les Îles lives in its three villages Cap-aux Meules, L Etang du Nord, and Fatima and the island is the service and administrative center for the archipelago.
