P&O Aurora. This beautiful and elegant ship is one of the largest in the P&O fleet and has all the hallmarks of conventional cruising with lots of exciting modern additions. Aurora received an update in March 2019 that saw the ship redesigned as an adults-only vessel. Gone are the kids clubs and teen areas, in their place are 28 brand-new cabins that were added to Deck 8. Other areas benefit from refreshed carpets, soft furnishings and upholstery. Aurora is one of the oldest ships in the P&O Cruises fleet (it was launched in 2000), and came out a much-needed £26 million refurbishment at the end of 2014 as the first to carry the new livery, featuring a contemporary version of the Union Flag on its bow, and a blue funnel. This may have disappointed a few P&O Cruises regulars, but it indicates the line's policy to combine a traditional British atmosphere with an up-to-date cruise experience.

The Northern Lights from Southampton – P&O Aurora – 24 April 2025. Embarking on a cruise from Southampton to witness the ethereal Northern Lights is a magical journey that promises unforgettable memories. Our voyage began with the Southampton port’s bustling atmosphere, where the anticipation was palpable among fellow travelers. The ship, a floating marvel of comfort and luxury, set the perfect tone for our adventure.

As we sailed through the serene waters, the onboard experience was nothing short of spectacular. The cruise offered an array of amenities, from gourmet dining options to cozy lounges where we could unwind and socialize. Each evening, we eagerly attended informative lectures about the Northern Lights, enhancing our understanding and appreciation of this natural wonder.

The anticipation built as we approached our destination in the Arctic Circle. The nights were spent on the ship’s deck, bundled in warm clothing, scanning the skies for any sign of the aurora borealis. Finally, the moment arrived. The sky erupted in a breathtaking display of colors—vivid greens, purples, and reds danced across the horizon, leaving us in awe. The mesmerizing spectacle of the Northern Lights was a profound, almost spiritual experience that words can scarcely capture.

During the daytime, the cruise offered excursions to charming Nordic towns. Each stop provided a unique glimpse into local cultures and landscapes, from the snow-draped streets of Tromsø to the picturesque beauty of the Lofoten Islands.

The return journey to Southampton was a time for reflection, as we shared stories and photos with newfound friends.
