Britannia was named by HM The Queen on March 10, 2015, in a glittering ceremony in Southampton. The Queen last named a P&O Cruises ship more than 20 years ago the 1,800-passenger Oriana -- then the largest ship in the fleet, which ushered in a new era of modern UK cruising. Fast forward 20 years and Britannia, arguably, does the same. The ship (at the time) was by far the biggest in P&O Cruises' fleet, carrying 3,647 passengers and weighing in at 141,000 tons -- 27,000 tons heavier and carrying 547 more passengers than the line's previous biggest ship, Azura. Britannia was also the biggest ship ever built specifically for the UK market, until sister Iona took that title in 2021.

Canary Islands & Madeira from Southampton – P&O Britannia – 3 October 2025

Canary Islands & Madeira from Southampton – P&O Britannia – 3 October 2025. Embarking on a cruise from Southampton to the Canary Islands and Portugal offers an enchanting blend of vibrant landscapes, rich history, and diverse cultures. This journey is a perfect escape for travelers seeking both relaxation and adventure.

The Canary Islands: A Volcanic Wonderland

Our first stop, the Canary Islands, is a breathtaking archipelago boasting stunning volcanic landscapes and idyllic beaches. Tenerife, the largest of the islands, welcomed us with its majestic Mount Teide, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Exploring the Teide National Park was a surreal experience, with its otherworldly terrain and panoramic vistas. The island also offers charming towns like La Laguna, where cobblestone streets and colonial architecture transport you to another era.

Gran Canaria, another highlight, captivated us with its diverse scenery. From the golden dunes of Maspalomas to the lush greenery of the north, the island is a testament to nature’s wonders. Don’t miss the vibrant capital, Las Palmas, where you can delve into the history of the Canary Islands at the Casa de Colón.

Portugal: A Tapestry of Culture and Cuisine

Sailing onwards to Portugal, our first port of call was the picturesque island of Madeira. Known as the “Pearl of the Atlantic,” Madeira’s dramatic cliffs and verdant levadas (irrigation channels) invite exploration. Funchal, the capital, enchants with its vibrant markets and botanical gardens.

The journey concluded in Lisbon, Portugal’s charismatic capital. Steeped in history, Lisbon’s cobbled streets and iconic yellow trams are a delight to explore. Highlights include the majestic Jerónimos Monastery and the vibrant Alfama district. A culinary adventure awaits with delectable pastéis de nata and fresh seafood, making Lisbon a feast for the senses.
